S star

The units of S* are seconds. The value of s* is the measured speed of the second moment (or as a good approximation, the peak of the derivative) of a boundary in a sedimentation equilibrium experiment. s* is not corrected for density, viscosity, or solute concentration. Usually, s* is not corrected to account for heterogeneity or other forms of nonideality in the sedimenting boundary.
